Michelle Goodrum on her blog, The Turning of the Generations has a great idea for 52 small organizational projects during 2012. First topic, Holiday Cards.
Tragically, I didn’t get any physical holiday cards this year. I attribute this to a few things. First, I’m only 33 so not many of my friends send holiday cards. More and more are having children so I expect this to start to increase over the next few years. Also, I live overseas so it takes about 3 weeks for my mail to arrive. Most likely my cards are somewhere en route making their way to the island.
My rules in the past, decorate the house until Christmas with them. Growing up, we taped cards to the door so we could all enjoy them. Considering that New Years has come and gone, I doubt that I’ll do that this year. I also used to keep the pretty ones thinking that I would reuse them at some point and make Christmas cards. This year I came to the realization that that would be more trouble than it was worth. I didn’t buy a single new Christmas card this year and just used the leftovers from previous years and I still have extras. I’m also not opposed to using some of the envelopes and paper from my wedding invitations and I’m likely to do that before I made my own Christmas cards. So for this year, I looked through my memory box and tossed old Christmas cards.
I’ll see what I end up with the next time the mail comes in, but I wholeheartedly support the idea of scanning the ones with genealogical information and then getting rid of the rest after enjoying them for a few weeks.
